Newsletter 9/12/13

Dear SRM Families,

Yesterday was our first garden day of the school year! It was wonderful for returning students to reconnect with their plots. There was a lot of harvesting of vegetables, herbs and flowers. I especially enjoyed watching one student come inside with a cucumber, go right to the snack table, and munch on his bounty!

Our first fundraiser of the year, the 2nd Annual Rummage Sale, is coming up on September 28th. A more detailed announcement is below, but please start looking through your house and garage for some of those things you want to get rid of that might bring some funds into the school!

1. BOARD MEETING – TONIGHT @ 6PM
2. WATER BOTTLES
3. END OF DAY DISMISSAL
4. UPPER ELEMENTARY WEAVERVILLE TRIP
5. MINIMUM DAY, SEPTEMBER 26th
6. RUMMAGE SALE, SEPTEMBER 28th

1. BOARD MEETING – TONIGHT @ 6PM

The SRM Board will meet tonight, Thursday, September 12th, at 6PM at the school. All are invited and encouraged to attend.

2. WATER BOTTLES

We highly encourage students to bring their own water bottle to school. Bottles can be filled throughout the day with filtered water. By bringing their own water bottle we avoid a lot of cups having to be washed at the end of the day and long lines at the drinking fountain after hot September playtime sessions!

3. END OF DAY DISMISSAL

We’ve shifted our end of day dismissal procedures to ensure a more orderly and safe environment at pick up. Students are now not allowed to leave the building until their parents have arrived at school. Once a staff member sees that a parent is here the child will be dismissed out of the building.

With more students there is more traffic in the parking lot. As always, please keep a watchful eye on your child and others and drive slow and safe through the lot.

4. UPPER ELEMENTARY WEAVERVILLE TRIP

Upper Elementary students (4th & 5th year) will be on a field trip to Weaverville from Wednesday, September 18th – Thursday, September 19th. Students will be touring the Trinity County Museum and Historic Park, Joss House, and will see live demonstrations in an old sawmill and blacksmith shop. We will be camping out at Trinity Lake on Wednesday night. Rebecca and myself will be the staff on this trip. Bridget, Sue and Krista (substitute) will be at school with the Lower Elementary students.
More detailed information will be sent directly to Upper Elementary families and not in this newsletter.

5. MINIMUM DAY, SEPTEMBER 26th

There will be a Minimum Day on Thursday, September 26th. Please pick up your child on that day at 11:30. There will be no lunch at school that day. Staff will be meeting through the afternoon to assess the first few weeks of school and make adjustments to best serve the needs of each child.

6. RUMMAGE SALE, SEPTEMBER 28th

The fundraising committee will be hosting our second annual school rummage sale on Saturday, September 28th in the SRM parking lot. All proceeds go to benefit the school.

Donations of gently used items are wanted!! Please drop-off your items at the school by Thursday the 26th or Friday the 27th between 10 to noon. If you have large items we can arrange a pick up time for you.

Help is needed to run the sale in the following areas:
Set up for the Sale
Working a shift
Make baked goods for the sale
Folding tables to borrow
Clean up

If you have questions or can work during the sale contact me directly. hopemorel@gmail.com or 599-0812

Personal Emergency Kits – New Families

Six Rivers Montessori strives to be as prepared as possible to deal with an emergency situation. Our greatest danger is from earthquakes. The school maintains an outside storage container with necessary first aid and practical supplies.

We also ask families to prepare a Personal Emergency Kit for their child. These kits are stored in the outside storage container with the other supplies.

Please put together a Personal Emergency Kit for your child and bring it in to school. Earthquakes don’t have schedules or deadlines, so I’m not going to provide one for you to get the kit turned in, but ASAP would be best. What should be contained in the kit is outlined in the document sent in last week’s newsletter. A hard copy is available in the entryway at school.

Spare Box of Clothes

Please bring a spare set of clothes for your child in a shoebox or similar sized box. Label the box with your child’s name. These boxes will be stored in the bathrooms.

Education quote of the week:

“Not in the service of any political or social creed should the teacher work, but in the service of the complete human being, able to exercise in freedom a self-disciplined will and judgment, unperverted by prejudice and undistorted by fear” -Maria Montessori
