Newsletter 5/8/14

Dear Six Rivers Montessori Families,

It was a special moment on Wednesday for the children to be together and view whales off of Patrick’s Point. Their gaze went from the big beasts of the ocean to focusing in on the microscopic wonders of the tide pools. Many thanks to our drivers – Mica, Michelle, Teresa, Sonja, Nicole, Garrett, Alicia and Elizabeth’s grandparents – for making this trip happen.

1. GAME DAY TOMORROW CANCELLED – RESCHEDULED

Due to scheduling conflicts of the organizers, the Game Day planned for tomorrow, 5/9, has been cancelled. It has been rescheduled for Friday, May 30th 3-5 p.m.

2. UPPER ELEMENTARY PARENT FORUM – TUESDAY, MAY 13TH

The upper elementary forum is on Tuesday, May 13th from 6-7PM. As we approach the end of the school year, Rebecca and Bridget would like to take the opportunity to come together with parents and discuss this year’s educational program. This forum is a chance to reflect on our strengths and identify areas for growth. The forum is for parents only.

Third year families are invited to the Upper Elementary forum.

The forum will include a potluck dinner here at school. The school will provide pizza, but we ask families to bring salad, drinks and dessert if
they can.

3rd years: salad
4th years: drinks
5th years: dessert

3. POTLUCK TUITION MEETING – THURSDAY, MAY 15TH

Our annual potluck tuition meeting will be held Thursday, May 15th from 6:00 – 7:30PM.

This is a required meeting and childcare will be available at Little Learners. Contact me if you need childcare and I will get more details to you.

If you absolutely cannot attend this meeting, please contact me in advance.

The potluck tuition meeting is the time to renew our commitment to sustaining our independent school. Our goal as a school is to offer a high-quality Montessori education for children and families that want it, and for whom our staff feels it is an appropriate choice. A family’s financial situation is not criteria for entrance into our school.

Therefore it is critical that we all have a clear understanding of what it costs to provide the quality of program that we all want in order for you to make a well-informed financial commitment to the school.

At this meeting, a review of the 2013/14 financial year and the preliminary budget for the 2014/15 school year will be presented by our Treasurer in a clear and understandable format. I will review how the Potluck tuition process works and how and when you need to make your tuition pledge for the upcoming school year. Time is also set aside to answer questions and open up dialogue.

We look forward to seeing you all on the 15th and renewing our commitment to sustain this amazing school!

4. SCHOOL PICNIC – SATURDAY, MAY 17TH

Hello SRM friends!

This is a reminder that our annual school picnic is coming up Saturday, May 17th from 3-7PM.

We will meet at Camp Bauer at 3pm to play softball, share a potluck and BBQ dinner and just generally have fun and relax together as a community.

I’d like to remind everyone to bring their own dishes, cups and cloth napkins to make this a zero waste event.

There will be a sign up sheet for meal planning on the outside bulletin board, so please keep an eye out for that over the next two weeks.

Bring your baseball mitts and helmets if you’ve got them.

Unfortunately, there are NO DOGS allowed on the premises, not even in your car. So I’m sorry but please leave your dogs at home or with a sitter. They are quite serious about this rule.

Camp Bauer is so beautiful and this promises to be a really fun final event for our school. We look so forward to seeing everyone there!

Directions to Camp Bauer are attached to this newsletter.

If you have any questions contact Mica.

6. CO-OP SCRIPT UPDATE

Coop Script is here! If you paid for script, your card is waiting in the box (alphabetized by payee’s last name). This purchase we made another $75 for the school! Thanks to all the families who have participated, and there will be another opportunity to ‘buy in’ the week after next.

7. READ-A-THON

8. CREATE ART, HELP THE LIBRARY

The Friends of the Redwood Libraries are looking for artists ages 5 to 12 to enter their 2015 Children’s Art Calendar contest. The top 12 entries in this year’s contest will be featured in the Friends’ 2015 Art Calendar. All sales from the Art Calendars benefit our Humboldt County Libraries.

9. LOWER EL. PARENT FORUM THANK YOU

Thank you to all parents who attended the lower elementary parent forum this week. The feedback was great and it was nice to have some time to spend with one another and talk about your children and the school. Please share any comments or suggestions on how we could make these forums even better in the future.

Thanks, Bridget

10. ONGOING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Community Events Calendar on Website

Check out the new Community Events Calendar on our website. This calendar is still a work in progress, and we welcome additions.

Report Upcoming Absences

This is a reminder to please report any upcoming absences you are aware of to the office as far in advance as you can. This helps our teachers in their planning. You can report upcoming absences by writing them down on the absence calendar in the entranceway, or by reporting to me by phone or email. Thank you.

Mini-Classes – June 9th & 10th

Similar to last year, we are opening up the opportunity for parents or people you might know to offer “mini-classes” to our students. The idea is to open up our students to the knowledge and skills that members of our community have to share. Last year, for example, mini-classes included Brown sharing his shark research here at school, and a field trip to both Arcata Scoop and Los Bagels to learn how those respective eateries made their products.

Do you or someone you know have something you’d like to share? Be in contact with me and we can discuss how to make it happen.
