Newsletter 4/3/14

Dear Six Rivers Montessori Families,

Each day at Six Rivers Montessori a student completes a report highlighting what happened at school. We call it the “Historians Report” and we have a special history journal that these reports are kept in. I thought you might enjoy some snippets from this week’s reports…

“Today Kayla did a polygon, Liam a pin map, Ella did grammar, Kyla did a Mind Bender…”

“Today was April Fools Day… We played capture the flag outside… Bodhi and Taylor did checkerboard”

“Upper El. did a math problem including gallons and quarts… We had gardening in the morning and some Upper El students started a compost sign… Upper El. also went to play frisbee golf at the pump station…”

“It was Cadence’s 9th birthday… a lot of lower elementary did research today… at recess lower el. kids played hockey… Melina and Caleb went to the library… today was an excellent day!”

Based on testimony from parents and students who have attended Game Day on Friday afternoons…it is a hit! The Wellness Group is planning to host Game/Handcraft Day on campus the second Friday of every month from 3-5 p.m. through the remainder of the school year. We will alternate “themes” between games and handcrafts. April 11th will be a hand craft day and May 9th games. Hope to see you there. Please bring your favorite game or crafting supplies.

5. CO-OP SCRIPT UPDATE
Thank you to the six families trying out our new Co-op script process. With the first purchase we have raised $70 for the school. Script cards will be in the pick-up box Monday morning

If you shop at the Co-op please join our script program! Details can be found in Ongoing Announcements.

6. EMBROIDERY HOOPS NEEDED

Handcrafters are looking for embroidery hoops between 4-7 inches in diameter for a project in May. If you have one or more to share please put them in the “Office Inbox” and we can return loaners when the project is done. Thanks!

7. ONGOING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Co-op Script

Dear Families,

We have a new way to create funds for our school by buying Coop Script. For every dollar our families spend at the North Coast Coop our school can retain 5%! Here is how it works:

1. Put check or cash (labeled with family name) in the Coop Script box, any amount from $50 on up. If it’s a check, please make it out to ‘Six Rivers Montessori’ and write ‘Coop Script’ in the memo line.

2. On the 15th & 1st of each month these funds will be tuned into pre-paid Coop gift cards of the total amount that the family has contributed. On the 17th and the third (or the next business day) the cards will be available for pick up at school and can then be used the same as cash at the register of either Coop location. For example, if Autumn Feral puts a check for $100 into the script box on March 28th, she will have a gift card waiting for her on April 3rd worth $100. What happens in between is that the fundraising committee will deposit the $100 check and then pay the Coop $95 for a gift card worth $100. Thereby the Coop has donated 5% of the subsequent purchases to our school.

I’m excited to see our school take advantage of this ‘free money’ through families that are making Coop purchases anyway. Please contact me if you have any questions, I’d be happy to talk.

Best,
Autumn Feral & the Fundraising Committee

The presentation and discussion will be led by Humboldt State Psychology professor Jeff Lough. Jeff is a nationally certified school psychologist and a former school principal.

Contents of the talk will revolve around the impact of screen time on brain development, learning and behavior and ways we as parents and educators can responsibly and consciously work with children in the digital age.

All Six Rivers families are highly encouraged to attend. The event is open to those outside the Six Rivers community.
