Our March field trip series begins next week! We’re looking forward to our Patrick’s Point trips with lower elementary and all-school performing arts excursions. Please help out by making sure you have booster seats ready to go on the days of the trips. I am also requesting that families label booster seats with their child’s name. Please join us: At Six Rivers Montessori, Friday (tonight), March 7th, from 6-8pm. This evening is for adults only, and unfortunately we are not able to provide childcare this time. Please contact Julie with any questions. We hope to see you there.

All first year students and new second & third year students will attend a field trip to Patrick’s Point State Park on Monday, March 10th from 9:30 – 11:30. A separate email with more details will be sent to these families.

3. ARCATA PLAYHOUSE FIELD TRIP – WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12TH

Our whole school will attend a performance of “Well at World’s End” at the Arcata Playhouse on Wednesday, March 12th from 1-2PM. Drivers are still needed for this trip. Please drop off booster seats in the morning.

4. BOARD MEETING – THURSDAY, MARCH 13TH

The SRM Board of Directors meeting is on Thursday, March 13th @ 6PM at the school. All are encouraged and invited to attend.

5. CLEANING HELP NEEDED – TUESDAY AFTERNOON

We are seeking volunteers to help out with cleaning the school on Tuesday afternoons. This mid-week clean includes cleaning the bathrooms, sweeping and vacuuming. The work ideally takes place right at 3:00 when school ends, however accommodations to come in later can be made. The work takes 30 – 45 minutes.

A sign up sheet has been placed in the entranceway. Please sign up directly on the sheet or respond to me by email.

If you are unfamiliar with the cleaning routine here then I can schedule a time to meet with you briefly to show you where supplies are located, etc.

6. BASKETBALL FUNDRAISER – SUNDAY, MARCH 16TH

A Basketball FUNdraiser for Six Rivers Montessori is being held on Sunday, March 16th from 3-5PM at the Arcata Community Center.

The event features 3 on 3 family games; 3 on 3 under 13 only games; and various shootouts.

Prices are $3 per child; $5 per adult; and $1 per shootout.

You can pre-register at SRM on the sign up sheet in the entranceway or sign-up at the event itself.

Also plan to join your friends for dinner at Carmela’s restaurant in Arcata after the event. Carmela’s is on G Street, across from Wildberries Market.

For more information contact the Weiss family.

7. HOOKS FROM HOOK RUGS

The hooks used for our hook rugs in the classroom have all but disappeared. If your child has brought any of those home, please have them returned to the classroom.

8. PORTFOLIOS

Portfolios will be available for pick up on Parent Education Night (March 27th)

9. HELP NEEDED

-We have a few broken electric pencil sharpeners and a broken toaster oven (still fairly new, purchased just over a year ago and not heaviliy used) that could possibly be repaired. I’m looking for someone to take these off our hands to either attempt a repair or to dump.

-There is old weed mat in our trash area that needs to go to the dump. If anyone is on a dump run and can take it away that would be appreciated.

10. RUN CLUB & FERNDALE RUN THIS SUNDAY

Hello everyone. This is Ed the runner guy here to let everyone know of a great, family-friendly run/race this Sunday in Ferndale. Starts in downtown Ferndale. Two miles and starts at 2PM. Slightly more challenging but very doable for most healthy people over 7 years old is the four mile and finally the ten mile run both start at noon. For more information check the the Six Rivers Run Club website. Also would once again like to invite all kids seven years and up for our weekly runs on Wednesdays @ 7:45AM at the Arcata Marsh and Fridays @ 9AM at Diamond Street trailhead for the community forest run (parents very welcome). For more info contact Ed.

11. ONGOING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Absences & Appointments

a. Absence & Appointments Calendar

With our school growing larger it is more of a challenge for staff to keep track of upcoming absences and doctor/dentist appointments. To help ourselves we have created a simple system and would appreciate your cooperation.

In the entranceway you will see a clipboard with a calendar upon which we are asking you to write-in any upcoming absences or appointments you are aware of. There is a calendar for each month, so you can write-in everything you are aware of through June. The more advance notice the better for our teachers.

Also, you can email me dates that you are aware of and I am happy to put them on the central absence calendar for you.

b. General note on absences

Bridget, Rebecca and myself encourage you to be careful about your child missing too much school. Illness happens. However, we feel a disproportionate amount of school has been missed by students for vacations, excursions and doctor/dentist appointments.

We recommend keeping Monday – Thursday sacred. When your child misses even a few hours of school they become thrown off kilter academically and socially. Missing days and weeks of school is especially challenging for a child to rebound from in a Montessori environment. Being a social learning environment, it also affects the education of kids who are present.

Part of the reason for not having school on Friday is to keep space available for family time. Perhaps consider some fun 3-day vacations in our region, and keep the longer vacations for the various week long breaks that we have.

Finally, make a strong effort to schedule doctor/dentist appointments on Friday.

Childcare For Parent Education Night

Childcare will be available on Parent Education Night (March 27th) at Little Learner’s Preschool, just a few blocks from our school, at 5050 Valley East. Please bring a snack for your child. Drop-off available at 6:15, and it is greatly appreciated if you can pick-up children by 8:30. Please RSVP now by contacting Julie, if you will be needing childcare. Thank you.

Education Quote of the week:

“It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it.” -Jacob Bronowski, Polish artist and academic
