Newsletter 1/30/14

Dear Six Rivers Montessori Families,

It has been an exciting week in the classroom!

As you may know each Monday a Community Council is held with the children. This is an opportunity for students to bring up both concerns and compliments regarding the sharing of our space and time together. Having missed the previous Monday for MLK Day we had quite the agenda this week. It’s impressive to have a body of students be able to raise concerns, brainstorm solutions, and come to agreements together.

Tuesday brought us the awesome Spanish sing-alongs with Lisa Monet and our ever awesome handcraft and ASL classes.

On Wednesday we had Callie and Hope back in the classroom working with students on garden planning for the Spring. Stay posted and get involved with the garden this year!

It’s also been a celebration of Chinese New Year this week! It all got off to a bang yesterday when Bridget gathered the students outside for a fireworks demonstration under the context of a lesson on the early history of gunpowder in China. Today the children enjoyed pot stickers and other traditional Chinese treats under the beautiful classroom decorations and with loved ones of the past remembered on our altar.

1. LOWER ELEMENTARY “WATER & OUR COMMUNITY TRIPS” – FEBRUARY 3RD AND 5TH

Lower elementary students will engage in two field trips next week with the intention of exploring human use of water in our community.

The first trip on February 3rd will be a short visit to the pump stations on the Mad River to see where the water supply for many Humboldt Bay residents comes from. No drivers are needed for this trip and the students don’t need to bring anything. Booster seats, however, need to be left at school at drop off. I will be driving the students in small groups to the pump station throughout the day.

The second trip on February 5th will take the students to the Arcata Community Forest and Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center. At the community forest, students will hike in to the old reservoir and receive a talk from a city Environmental Services employee on this historic supply of water for the city. At the marsh, students will learn about Arcata’s unique wastewater treatment system.

Drivers ARE needed for this trip on February 5th. Lunch will be at school when we return. Please leave booster seats in the morning at drop off.

2. OPEN FORUMS – 1/30 & 2/6

I am offering open forums tonight, January 30th @ 7PM and on February 6th @ 3:15 PM at the school. These forums have no set agenda. I am simply making myself available to answer questions and address concerns you may have on anything pertaining to the school. We will set the agenda together on the spot.

If you can’t make the forums, please remember that I am available for you and can make a separate time to meet.

Bridget and Rebecca also want to remind the community that they will make themselves available to address questions or concerns related specifically to your child or the curriculum. Contact them directly or through the office.

3. COMMUNITY EVENTS COMMITTEE MEETING – SATURDAY, 2/8

The community events committee will be meeting at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 8th at Brio in Arcata. Community events can be fun AND meaningful. If you have any ideas for future events or are just curious about what we’re planning, please join us. We’d love to have you. Thanks!
Mica

4. VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day at SRM will be celebrated on Thursday, February 13th. Children who wish to can exchange Valentines. If they choose to give Valentines, they need to make sure they have one for each member of the school. Please avoid sugary or unhealthy treats. As of the 13th there will be 39 students in the school.

5. SRM SWEATSHIRTS STILL AVAILABLE

There are still some SRM sweatshirts for sale!
Just inside the front door of the classroom there is a coat closet with some sweatshirts hanging on the door. There is also a Manila envelope with available sizes, prices and instructions for purchasing. Grab you one before they’re gone!

6. TAKE A CHILD OUTSIDE DAY – SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1ST

Take a Child Outside Day and
Environmental Education Resource Fair
Saturday, February 1, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center

Meet a Falcon! Build a Jellyfish! Make a Solar Pizza Oven! Take A Child Outside Day is a festival of fun outdoor play for kids and their caregivers. This Saturday, a wealth of local environmental educators will offer nature-based activities, games, and crafts along the Arcata Marsh’s 0.6 mile Log Pond Loop Trail (beginning at the Interpretive Center). Kids are invited to fill their “eco-passport” by adventuring along the trail with their adults and participating in these activities (turn a filled eco-passport in for a prize!). Additionally, teachers and school staff are invited to attend and learn about field trips, in-class presentations, environment-themed curriculum and other opportunities for their students at each station. This free community event is sponsored by the North Coast CREEC Network, Friends of the Arcata Marsh, Redwood Science Project, and Humboldt State Natural History Museum. To learn more, please contact Allison Poklemba at 826-4479 ext. 3 or allison@creec.org

7. WEED MAT DUMP

There is some old weed mat in our garbage/recycling area that needs to be taken to the dump. Is anyone on a dump run soon and can swing by and take it away for us?

8. ONGOING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Any one of us will be happy to bring your comments to the meeting and return a timely response to you. We welcome phone calls, individual emails and being nabbed in the parking lot.
